Award-winning journalist donates prize-money to wildlife sanctuary
Writer triumped in four categories at annual ceremony
A journalist who triumphed in four categories at a recent awards ceremony has donated part of his prize money to a wildlife sanctuary.
Daniel Shailer was named journalist of the year at February's Highland and Islands Media Awards, having also won the business reporter, young reporter and best feature of the year titles.
The journalist of the year award included a £500 prize, of which £300 has been donated to Shetland's Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, which supports seals, otters and other marine animals.
Daniel, formerly of the Shetland Times and now freelance, is pictured below with the sanctuary's boss Pete Bevington.
Said Daniel: "It’s not uncommon these days for seals stranded in Orkney to find themselves on a ferry north towards the safe hands at Hillswick.
"With marine pollution on the rise and climate change bringing ever worse storms to the Northern Isles, Hillswick are busier than ever and I’m proud to be able to support their work."
Pete, whose late wife Jan founded the charity, added: “We are extremely grateful to Daniel for his generosity and for thinking of us when it came to choosing a charity for his donation.
"He has been a stalwart campaigner for the environment since he has been reporting in Shetland and we very much appreciate the valuable work he has been doing in this field."
